First Annual DanceAbility Fundraiser Hosted by Logboat http://missouricontemporaryballet.org/first-annual-danceability-fundraiser-hosted-by-logboat/ Thu, 14 Jul 2016 21:14:48 +0000 http://missouricontemporaryballet.org/?p=980 School of Missouri Contemporary Ballet’s adaptive dance program, DanceAbility, was pioneered by Jennifer Highbarger as mid-Missouri’s only program providing an opportunity for children and adults to learn and grow through dance. This movement based therapy supports the development not only of critical motor and social skills, but also self-confidence and personal growth through creative expression.

Please join us for DanceAbility’s first annual fundraiser, ‘Art Supporting the Arts,’ on Friday, August 26th, from 4:30-7:30 p.m. at Logboat Brewery in Columbia, with a rain date of Thursday, September 8th.

Enjoy a brew and a silent auction of fabulous art donated by local artists. Logboat will donate $1 per beer sold during the event to DanceAbility! Also on location for this family friendly event will be the “Playing With Fire” pizza truck and a temporary tattoo station for the kids.

All proceeds will go directly to covering the costs of participation in the program for special needs students and their families, with the goal of making the program completely tuition free.

We hope you will be able to join us for a fun night and an opportunity meet some of our amazing students!

School of MCB, Mexico Alumnus to join St. Louis Ballet http://missouricontemporaryballet.org/school-of-mcb-mexico-alumnus-to-join-st-louis-ballet/ Wed, 27 Apr 2016 15:52:11 +0000 http://missouricontemporaryballet.org/?p=907 michael burkeMichael Burke grew up in Mexico, MO and began dancing at age 3. At first he was forced to go because his older sisters wanted to dance, but as he grew older and began to study with Missouri Contemporary Ballet dancers, his interest grew. By his sophomore year in high school, the School of MCB was established in Mexico and Michael had the opportunity to pursue a serious study of dance.

Now in his second year of a dance major at University of Cincinnati, Michael has been offered salaried contracts at three professional ballet companies. With a platter of options, Michael has decided to join St. Louis Ballet because of their exciting repertoire and guest choreographers.

He recalls his experience at School of MCB, being inspired by teachers such as Fernando Rodriguez, Elise Eslick, Joel Hathaway and Founder and Artistic Director Karen Mareck Grundy. He says that the school was “a very caring and nurturing environment” and his teachers encouraged him at every turn. When asked what inspires him to dance, his answer is music. Dance allows him to “…experience it, but also show how I feel the music is moving me.” He says, “If I haven’t danced for a while I have to go back and do it. I can’t not do it.”

Michael will complete his college education remotely while pursuing his contract beginning in the fall. The School of MCB congratulates Michael and wishes him the best in his endeavors!
