THE EVENING’S COMPETITION
OPENING NUMBER: Performed by Missouri Contemporary Ballet
DANCING ROUND ONE (THE RHUMBA): Each of our celebrities has been paired with a ballroom dance instructor/ professional from Twilight Dance Studio. In Round One, our dancers will be performing the Rhumba. Following each performance, the dance pair will be critiqued by our panel of judges and given a rating between 1 and 10. The judges’ critiques may be used by the audience to help guide their voting, but tonight’s winners will be decided strictly by votes from the audience.
VOTING ROUND ONE: Following Round One of the competition, audience members will vote, with cash/check contributions, for their favorite dancing couple. The bottom four couples will be eliminated. The top six couples will advance to Round Two.
RAFFLE OFF $5000 DIAMOND NECKLACE & $500 GAS CARD FOR MFA/BREAKTIME: Raffle tickets will be sold for $10.00 each. There will be two drawings; the first ticket drawn will win a $500 gas card at MFA/Breaktime locations, and the second ticket drawn will win a $5000 diamond necklace donated by Gary B. Robinson Jewelers.
TWILIGHT DANCES: During the voting between rounds, Twilight Dances will be performed by the instructors/ entertainers (in case you want to see what REAL ballroom dancing looks like).
DANCING ROUND TWO (THE SALSA): The six advancing couples will perform the Salsa during Round Two. Again, they will be critiqued and rated by our panel of judges.
VOTING ROUND TWO: Following Round Two, audience members will again vote, with cash contributions, for their favorite dancing couple.
INTERMISSION-NONFINALISTS PERFORM THE SALSA: In order to allow all celebrities to perform both dances they have worked so hard at learning.
CLOSING NUMBER: Performed by Missouri Contemporary Ballet
ANNOUNCEMENT OF THE WINNERS: Following a quick tabulation of the votes, the winners of the 2008 “Dancing with Missouri Stars” will be announced!
WHO’S WHO
CELEBRITIES
VAN ALLEN is CEO of TimeLine Recruiting, a physician recruiting firm based in Columbia. He is also an owner/operator of Hemingway’s Wine & Bistro, the hot-spot which burst on the local restaurant scene last year. Van holds degrees from the world famous and extremely well-known Mary Hardin-Baylor and Southwestern Universities. Regulars at the Country Club of Missouri tell us that Van is accomplished in a wide variety of skills such as golfing, singing and schmoozing, but perhaps not so much ballroom dancing.
SCOTT CROOM is becoming Columbia’s “personal trainer of the stars” boasting a high-powered list of well-known, and often ridiculously out-of-shape, clientele. He is asked to perform miracles, and quite often pulls it off. Scott played football for Central Missouri State, where he earned degrees in physical education, health and nutrition. He has been employed by Wilson’s Gym for thirteen years. Scott enjoys hunting, fishing, and spending time with his wife and two children.
SARAH FRENCH enjoyed being the Co-Hostess of last year’s DWMS that she asked to come back and dance this year. Thank goodness we were able to scrape up someone with even an ounce of proven composure on stage.
Sarah, of course, served as Miss Missouri in 2007. She is scheduled to graduate from Mizzou later this month with a degree in broadcast journalism. She is currently working as a reporter/anchor for KOMU-TV and will be working as an intern for the 2008 Summer Olympic Games in
Beijing.
BARBARA GLENN is the co-owner of Missouri Cotton Exchange, a local business which provides graphic design, screen printing and embroidery services across the United States. Barb is an avid tennis player and hopes she will be able a carry over her fancy footwork from the courts to the dance floor. Barb and her husband, Jeff, have been actively involved in the community for a number of years.
STEVE HAGAN is the first non-Columbia resident to participate in DWMS. He is owner of the financial planning firm Steve P. Hagan & Associates in Mexico, Missouri and is certainly the pride of Audrain County, at least until he steps on the dance floor tonight. Steve is a graduate of Rockhurst College, and has been a significant civic leader in Mexico for a number of years. Steve could be a “dark horse” in this competition, boasting experience in acting and performing with his three-man band, The Echo’s, and as president of Presser Performing Arts Center in Mexico.
BRENDA HAYNES is a licensed educator with Kindermusik, an organization which provides introductory musical education to young children. Brenda was formerly a special education instructor with Columbia Public Schools before opening her own Kindermusik Studio in Columbia in 2005. Brenda hails from a family of musicians and singers. She obviously loves music. But can she dance to it?
RICHARD KING, the owner of Columbia’s Blue Note and Mojo’s, is a legend on Columbia’s stage and entertainment scene. Problem is Richard is always behind the stage rather than dancing on it. Richard is a
popular and important asset in the downtown business community, not only as long-time owner of the Blue Note, but also as a tireless organizer of the 9th Street Summerfest and the Roots N’ Blues BBQ Festival.
YVETTE NIETO is the owner of Grindstone Fitness Studio in Columbia, so we should at least feel comfortable that both she and Scott Croom will be able to make it through their entire dances tonight without collapsing.
JEROME SALLY, one can only imagine, is going to cast an intimidating figure on the dance floor. Assuming the dance floor can hold him.
Currently an assistant principal at Columbia’s West Junior High School,
Jerome is even better known for his career as a college and professional football player. He was a star defensive lineman at Mizzou from 1978-1981 and is a member of the Missouri Intercollegiate Athletics Hall of Fame. Jerome also enjoyed a solid and productive career in the NFL from 1982-1988, earning a Super Bowl ring as a member of the world champion New York Giants in 1987.
FRANK SOVICH has been the co-owner of Columbia’s Marathon Office Interiors since 2004. Originally from St. Louis, Frank earned his business degree from Mizzou and moved permanently to Columbia in 1996.
In addition to running his successful business and donating time to various local civic and charitable organizations, Frank enjoys spending time with his wife, Jennifer, his teenage daughter,
and son.
MASTER and MISTRESS OF CEREMONIES
DOUG PUGH, returns as our Master of Ceremonies for the second consecutive year. Doug is a partner with the Columbia law firm Eng & Woods. He is also the author of “Homeboy”, a bi-weekly humor column in the Columbia Daily Tribune. Doug claims to be a sensational dancer in his own right, but prefers to reserve those talents for rave parties and late-night wedding receptions, where he says the lack of judging allows him greater freedom to concentrate on his aggressive stumbling style.
CANDICE CRAWFORD, the reigning Miss Missouri USA, will serve as this evening’s Co-Hostess. Originally from Texas, Candice is a junior broadcast journalism major at Mizzou. Last November, she was selected over 47 other contestants to be named Miss Missouri for 2008, and was in the top ten at the Miss USA pageant. She succeeds last year’s Miss Missouri, Sarah French, as Co-Hostess of DWMS. Candice’s brother, Chase, is the star of “Gossip Girl”, the new hit television show on the CW network.
PANEL OF JUDGES
FRED PARRY, returns as by far our least qualified dance judge for the second year in a row. Fred is the owner and publisher of Inside Columbia magazine, and is co-host of the Morning Meeting radio show every weekday morning on KFRU. Neither of these positions, nor anything else in Fred’s colorful background, are related in even the most remote manner to ballroom dancing, which leads us to wonder what he’s doing here to begin with.
LORI ANNE GADDY, graduates from the dance floor to the judging booth for this year’s competition. In 2007, Lori Anne and her partner Jason Shearin, were declared champions of the first-ever DWMS. Lori Anne is the owner of Columbia’s Downtown Alterations. She is a graduate of Stephens College, where she claims to have majored in something known as “Philosophy, Law and Rhetoric”, which one can only assume provided invaluable training for her career in the sewing business.
JOHN SWICK, returns as a judge this year to lend this competition its only shred of legitimacy. John has been performing as a dancer for over
40 years, and has earned eight national titles in various styles of dance. He is currently on the faculty at Oklahoma City University’s School of Dance. He is a certified national-level judge, chairman judge, scrutineer and examiner of ballroom dance. In other words, his qualifications are exactly the opposite as Fred Parry’s.
